Ch. 2 — Pt. 1

Jump Scare

The Meteor. Created by Ross Seaborn and Justin Pimentel.

June aims a jagged handgun with a large silencer attached to its barrel. While keeping his hands on the steering wheel, Sebastian freezes in fear. He cannot believe what’s happening.

"Alright. Just keep us moving." June orders.

He takes his foot off the brake and puts it back on the gas. The tadpole continues to move forward.

"Good. Just um… keep driving alright?" She looks out each of the windows nervously.

"Mhm." He nods.

There is a double knock from inside the little closet door. June leans her head back while keeping her eyes locked on Sebastian.

"Yeah, yeah. Come out, Dusty. He’s made us."

The closet door opens and a muscular woman with messy red hair steps out. Her arms are covered in tattoos and small burns. She holds a snub-nose revolver in one hand and rubs her eyes in frustration with the other; obscuring her face for the most part. She stops a few paces outside of the closet, in clear view from Sebastian’s rear view mirror.

"No, he didn’t." Dusty sighs.

"Yes, he did! He literally said it!"

"But I don’t think he meant it—"

"It’s because you kept making noise, you asshole! I had this handled until you gave us away!" June accuses.

Dusty shakes her head before lowering her hand, revealing a pleasantly freckled visage layered deep with a tired frustration. Her eyes are such a stark pale shade of blue that their sunlit glow seizes Sebastian’s attention away from the road. As soon as her eyes meet his, he reflexively looks away.

"Believe me, the panel falling over was the least suspicious thing that happened," Dusty says with a growing anger in her voice. "Hey, lune." She turns her attention towards Sebastian.

"Hm?" He remains faced forward with a stiff posture.

"What gave us away?" Dusty asks. "Was it the noise? Or was it everything else she said?"

June’s eyes narrow. Dusty immediately takes a step back and gently raises her hand.

"No. I… really didn’t know." His voice trembles.

"Then why’d you accuse me? You seemed pretty confident about it, too!" June chimes in.

"It was a joke. Because she said uh, because you’re with the union." He explains.

"No, we’re not with a union. We’re pirates." Dusty says.

"Uh… okay, so you weren’t involved with the attack—" He stumbles through his battered thoughts.

"Yeah, no. Vento attacked us." June corrects.

"Oh." Sebastian is left stunned from the whiplash.

He struggles to understand what she means. This is all too much for him to process at once. He blinks rapidly in response to his racing mind. Pirates were the last thing he ever expected to encounter. Dusty watches him carefully through the mirror.

"Right. Are they really telling everyone that some labor union did it?" She asks.

"Yes." He nods as he returns from his disassociation.

"Huh. That’s pretty fucked up." She says.

"Hey! At least that clears our name!" June smiles wide.

"Not from the military. They’ll definitely remember us. But… it’s nice to know that they aren’t showing us on the news." Dusty smiles a bit too, her eyes brightening at the positive thought. However, her spark dims once her mind returns to reality.

"We’re still in deep trouble here. But if we make it back, we’ll have good news." She says.

"If? What do you mean if?! This whole thing was your idea!" June’s smile fades quickly as she waves her arms towards the cabin around her.

"I mean… it was a huge gamble from the start…" Dusty’s eyes remain distant.

"I can’t believe the Captain agreed to this ridiculous plan!"

"Look, I… I just want to get us out of the deep shit we’re stuck in. It was the only idea on the table." Dusty speaks sternly as she begins to lose her patience again.

"And it’s insane that you wanted to try and do this on your own! You’re lucky she caught you before you left. Otherwise, we would have never seen you again!" June rants.

"...Right." Dusty looks out the front window, down the long road that stretches on and on ahead.

"Well? We’ve been found out. Now what do we do?" June smirks.

"Nothing’s changed. The lune’s gonna drive us into town, we get our fuel, then we leave."

"And what about him?"

"What about him? We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it." Dusty answers.

Sebastian catches Dusty’s eyes in the mirror again. The moment they make contact, hers immediately break away. She then avoids looking in his direction entirely.
