Ch. 2 — Pt. 4

Cold Cold Heart

They finally reach the enormous main gates of Oasis. Though the line to get in is quite long, the traffic isn’t nearly as bad as it was when Sebastian and Delphine initially left.

Dusty and June continue to stare at one another.

"I don’t like it either, June. I don’t like it." Dusty says quietly.

After a moment of intense thinking, June nods. She accepts the reality that there aren’t any better options and resigns to her fate. Then, she makes a little nod towards Sebastian. Dusty doesn’t understand what it means. June winks and walks towards Sebastian before Dusty can ask any questions. June stares at Sebastian intensely. Sebastian glances over a couple times before locking eyes with her.

"It’s not too cold, is it?" She asks, the pitch of her voice raised higher than normal.

Sebastian hesitates. Precious seconds slip away because of a premature sense of guilt. After a few milliseconds of intensive thought, he tries to recover.

"Do you want to borrow my jacket?" He asks.

June’s intensity crumbles as the question catches her off guard. Her face turns a bit red as her mind trips.

"Yes. Um… Yeah. Why not?" Her response is unusually quiet.

Sebastian awkwardly takes off his jacket while seated. Her face still red, June stands patiently as she watches Sebastian’s awkward shuffle. He eventually gets his jacket off and hands it to June.

She puts it on and smiles. "Thanks, Sebastian."

They hold eye contact for a very brief moment. For the first time, June’s eyes are completely relaxed. It isn’t until now that Sebastian notices a difference between her irises. It’s akin to heterochromia, but both eyes are the same shade of light brown. The difference lies in each iris’ complexity.

Her right eye is very complex, but something about it seems distant and flat.

Her left eye is nuanced. It is filled with subtle movements and imperfections, allowing his acuity to read a display of vulnerability within. Sebastian is too caught up in the dichotomy of June’s eyes to read the practiced steps of her emotional manipulation. Dusty watches from afar, standing in front of the entrance to the little cargo closet. She shakes her head and takes a moment before clearing her throat.

"Are we climbing into this death trap or not?" She asks.

"Alright!" June yells as she walks over.

June steps away and follows Dusty into the cargo closet. Within, there is a hatch that leads directly into the freezer. There is a large bulb next to the hatch that glows red, indicating that the hatch is locked.

"Hey. Lune. How do you open this thing?" Dusty calls out.

"I have to disengage the lock from here. Hold on a second." Sebastian answers.

Sebastian taps through a few menus on the dashboard terminal, before finding the freezer firmware interface. He attempts to open the door, but he’s blocked by a confirmation warning:

WARNING! OPENING THE UNIT WILL COMPROMISE THE INTERNAL TEMPERATURE. ARE YOU SURE YOU WOULD LIKE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR?

Sebastian taps yes and the large light near the hatch switches from red to green. The display immediately begins to flash with a warning:

WARNING! UNIT OPEN!

Dusty opens the hatch and a blast of cold air hits her and June. Even with Sebastian’s jacket on, June begins to shiver. They both cautiously make their way into the freezer. It’s packed with frozen meat, but there’s enough space for the two of them to stand. Dusty shuts the hatch.

ATTENTION! UNIT IS CLOSED. WOULD YOU LIKE TO LOCK THE DOOR?

Sebastian’s hands begin to tremble. He taps YES.

Silence.

There is a single, loud, pound from the other side of the hatch.

Then, silence again.
